• an address to the court contrasting Israel’s sin and God’s faithfulness

• a call to turn back to God

Read Micah 6 and observe the structure. In that example, the Lord takes Israel to court… in which the Lord presides as the judge. Yikes! There is no defense against Him, and you can rest assured that His case is airtight.

Structured passages aren’t limited to the prophetic books. Other literary devices can be found throughout Scripture, because creative human writers under the direction of the divine Author gave this literature an organized structure. In other words, this stuff hangs together because God directed His writers accordingly.

Finally, highly crafted literature contains artistically designed features. The Lord allowed the authors of Scripture to use their unique, personalized writing qualities and techniques. These are not structural features per se, but divine truth seasoned with the stylistic flavors of the human writers. These writing styles help readers gain a greater understanding of the Lord’s message.

A great example of this is found in the Gospel of John. This account of Jesus’ life is a stunning narrative full of amazing literary substance and style. One feature among many used by John is his tendency to present purposeful “misunderstandings” between Jesus and His audience. R. Alan Culpepper identified three factors that characterize these verbal disconnects:
