As each half note has the same duration as two quarter notes, it is natural that there are two half notes per measure.

As for the eighth notes and sixteenth notes, they are represented differently as they can be shown individually or in groups of 2, 3 or 4. The eighth notes – called a quaver – are represented by filled circles, which have a vertical line as well as a single curl off that line attached to them. When they are shown in the groups aforementioned, a single horizontal line unites the group:
