Chapter Five: Legato (Hammer-ons, Pull-offs and Taps)

Legato literally means “in a smooth and flowing manner” and on guitar this is a catch-all term for using hammer-ons, pull-offs, and even right-hand tapping. Hitting the string with the pick creates an audible sharp “attack” at the beginning of the note, so legato is any technique whereby you don’t use the pick to sound a note.

When playing guitar, legato techniques are often used to play very quickly. Many guitarists find that the biggest factor limiting their speed and fluency is the pick. By removing most of the picked notes, it’s possible to play long, smooth phrases on the guitar at breakneck speed. Joe Satriani is a huge fan of legato playing.

Let’s examine the two main techniques that create legato on the guitar: hammer-ons and pull-offs.
