West Wycombe Park, Bucks, England

The positioning of garden buildings on raised mounds enlarges the prospect for those within, and also enhances the significance of the building as a focal point in a garden.

Pyramid mound

The simplest mounds are small hills made of brick or stone, infilled with earth and turfed. Sometimes you will find them built in the shape of a pyramid. Medieval mounds acted as watchtowers in times of conflict and garden vantage points in peace.

Spiral mound

The spiral mound, also known as a snail mound, has a path cut into it that circumnavigates the hill, making the ascent (and descent) easier. Trees and shrubs may be planted on and around the mound and a summerhouse sited on top.
