Shortening Sounds for Clarity and Precision

Fast raps that require a lot of syllables to be said clearly usually require a staccato style of delivery, so that the words can be more easily comprehended. Fast-rapping MCs such as Tech N9ne use this technique—his track “Welcome to the Midwest” (00:08) uses a lot of staccato in the first verse to make sure the lyrics are said clearly and precisely. Writing to the specific beat that will be rapped over often helps MCs judge how long or short syllables should be.

Evidence, Dilated Peoples

I used to do that a lot, just write without a beat, [but] then I had a problem where I would start squeezing words in sometimes or have a lack of words and extending certain words that shouldn’t have been extended. So I kinda figured it’s always better for me to try to script my lyrics to a track.
