Make a plan when tackling an overgrown fruit tree. Eliminate deadwood and rubbing and crossing branches first; then tackle opening up the center of the plant and eliminating excessive vegetative growth over the course of several years.

Pruning Shrubs

Every shrub requires the same basic routine care: the removal of dead, diseased, and damaged wood, along with the elimination of rubbing and crossing branches. Some shrubs require little else in the way of regular attention, while others benefit from more specific trimming and shaping. The best approach not only varies according to species but also depends on the role a particular shrub plays in the landscape. Is it primarily grown for abundant flowers, showy foliage, colorful stems, or privacy?

For shrubs grown for flowers, timing is especially important, since some plants produce flower buds on new wood and others on old wood. If you are not sure of the identity of the shrub, the following general rules provide a helpful guideline:
