Venue takes expenses off the top.

What Is It?: A venue will take an amount off the top to cover expenses before they split the door with the organizer of the show (the headliner—you). The standard is about $50–$350 depending on the size of the club. A club that takes more than $350 for an under-300 capacity room is screwing you. And this isn’t $50–$350 off the top per band. It’s $50–$350 off the top of the total, and the rest is split with the organizer of the show, who then pays out everyone else on the bill.

Standard door splits after expenses:

70%–100% cut (in your favor) for 21+

70%–85% cut (in your favor) for 18+

50%–70% cut (in your favor) for all ages

Is It Fair?: Sure. They wouldn’t need to hire a sound guy or a door gal if you weren’t playing that night. This money (typically) does directly go to those people and then the venue splits the remaining money with you fairly. But, just remember, they are making bar sales, from which you don’t get a cut. So if they take more off the top, you should negotiate for a higher cut after expenses. The reason the split is lower for all ages vs. 18+ nights is because venues typically need to hire more security for all-ages shows and enforce an earlier curfew (less drinking time for the drinkers).
