SUMMARY: Top Teaching Pros and Their Full-Swing Methods

SMALL -M USCLE METHOD

The traditional small-muscle method emphasizes the role of the hands and arms (as opposed to the body) in controlling the swing. Advocates claim it is the most effective method for curing a slice because slicers overuse body action and underuse hands and arms. Recommend for beginners and average golfers, most of whom slice the ball.

Jim Flick, Bob Toski

BIG -M USCLE METHOD

The modern big-muscle method emphasizes the role of the body (as opposed to hands and arms) in controlling the swing. Advocates claim it is the most effective method for curing a hook because hookers overuse hands and arms and underuse body action. Recommended for advanced players.

Jimmy Ballard, Michael Hebron, David Leadbetter, Jim McLean

MIXED -M USCLE METHOD

The postmodern mixed-muscle method emphasis coordination of body action and hand and arm action so they “match”; recommended for all ability levels. Postmodern variations developed for Tiger Woods require exceptional coordination and strength; recommended for a gifted few.

Chuck Cook, Hank Haney, Butch Harmon, Rick Smith

BIOMECHANICAL METHODS

Biomechanical methods aim to prescribe the most efficient golf swing based on correct movements of the joints and spine. The ModelPro swing uses film and statistics to offer a computer-generated graphic ideal swing. The LAWs of Golf system, derived from biomechanical studies, matches swing methods to individual body types—leverage swing prescribed for average physiques; arc swing prescribed for long-armed, flexible physiques; width swing prescribed for short-armed, muscular physiques.

Mike Adams, Dr. Jim Suttie, T. J. Tomasi (LAWs of Golf), Dr. Ralph Mann, Fred Griffin (ModelPro), Rick Martino

NONTRADITIONAL METHODS

The Gravity Golf system features two swings based on gravity, momentum, and rotation. The for-now version, patterned after the swings of Fred Couples and Jack Nicklaus, emphasizes release of tension, fall, and “counter fall.” The futuristic version features a “referenced up route” takeaway that eliminates a conventional backswing. The Natural Golf system, based on the swing of Canadian legend Moe Norman, deliberately limits forearm rotation, hip rotation, and backswing length to promote a“Square Tracking” action. Recommended for golfers dissatisfied with traditional methods.

David Lee (Gravity Golf), Ed Woronicz (Natural Golf)
