If you want to reduce all kinds of waste, not just plastic, then think about bulk-buying foods that you normally buy in tins as well, which can often come with plastic wrapping around them or use plastic labelling. If you buy these products dried then you’ll have to get used to soaking them for a few hours before you want to cook, but the upside is you’ll probably save quite a bit of money as buying dried pulses and beans in bulk is almost always the cheaper option. In addition to this, although aluminium tins are more regularly recycled than most plastic packaging, the production process has its own set of problems that it’s good to avoid where possible. A growing number of shops around the world are beginning to sell dried goods in smaller quantities in paper bags (or even in whatever container you supply), bringing us the best of both worlds.
Some of the worst cases of excessive waste come in the form of multipacks – plastic packages inside plastic packages, with the contents often going to the bin as well, contributing to the growing food waste problem. When going shopping, be sure to try and buy only what you need rather than getting tempted by offers of more for the price of less that are likely to be no more than repackaged versions of the same thing you can get further down the shelf. Of course, if you do need a larger quantity or to save money on a particular product, look out for a single large package (sometimes even in paper or cardboard rather than plastic), instead of several smaller ones.
