2.6 The Art of Enjoyment

Eating is essential. The ability to enjoy is an art.

—Francois de la Rochefoucauld

■ When I grew up, my family only ever ate margarine on our bread. Butter was for rare and special occasions only. As soon as I moved out, I made a point of buying butter – real creamy butter that tasted absolutely amazing on hot toast! Butter remains one of my favorite tastes to this day.

The ability to enjoy something is connected to how you perceive, or in this case savor it. The origins of the word, “enjoy” mean to “have the use or benefit of”. To ask what you have enjoyed today originally meant asking if you had eaten today. You may simply “use” your soft bed, delicious coffee or gourmet food or you can savor it and consider it a gift – something special.

Enjoying something for the first time is different than enjoying it for the nth time. The first time is often more intense, however, the depth and enjoyment of the experience can increase if you consider it as if it were for the first time.

I challenge you to consider certain daily routines as if they were for the first time: taking the first shower of the day, your first coffee in the morning or the first slice of toast with butter. Savor the flavor!

■ Time to think

What would help to increase your enjoyment?

■ Time to act

Enjoy something today as if it were for the first time. Observe what difference this makes.
