Behind the Scenes of Nahum

Starring Role

Nahum, Judean prophet who vows that God will punish Assyria for its cruelty (1:1)

Plot

For centuries the Assyrian Empire, headquartered in what is now northern Iraq, has been terrorizing the Middle East. At will, they crush nations. One of the victims is the northern Jewish nation of Israel, wiped out in 722 B.C. Many survivors are deported to central Assyria—especially craftsmen, teachers, and other skilled people who can make a valuable contribution to the empire.

Roughly 100 years later, while Assyria is still bullying the Mediterranean world, the Jewish prophet Nahum has a vision about the empire. He sees its savagery and its defiance of God. And he hears what God says he will do to Assyria: “I will send you to the grave. . . . You will never again make victims of others” (1:14; 2:13). Nahum delivers this message to the people of his nation, who are currently being forced to serve the empire by paying taxes to it.

Did You Know?

• English poet Lord Bryon (1788–1824) in his poem The Destruction of Sennacherib portrays the fierceness of the Assyrian army: The Assyrian came down like the wolf on the fold, and his cohorts were gleaming in purple and gold.

• About 100 years before Nahum, the prophet Jonah told Nineveh it would be destroyed in 40 days. The people repented and were spared.
