Melanie

Melanie could not make sense of her thoughts or her emotions. She had woken up confused and fearful about the future. Her home was destroyed, her job was slipping out of her clutches with each passing day, and Zachary—he was putting her through all the emotions in the book. The only person who could talk sense into her was Jenna.

It was fortuitous that Jenna was the one to walk in on Melanie and Zachary. If anyone else in the office had caught them, she’d have probably found herself walking off the premise soon after.

Jenna promised not to tell anyone what she saw, but she made no promises about not giving Melanie the third degree as soon as the workday was over. Melanie couldn’t blame her. Kissing the new guy in the janitor closet? She’d reached a new low.

Melanie had more self-respect. She was professional, honest.

And yet, ever since Zachary arrived, she’d been keeping secrets and sneaking around. The most worrying part was that she found it all so thrilling.

Despite Jenna’s warnings, Melanie wanted to spend time with Zachary. He had an air of confidence about him, and an apparent inner strength that kept him calm amid chaos. Kissing him gave her a high; one that could very quickly turn into an addiction.

She could just picture it, six months from that moment, sitting in a group session. “Hi, my name is Melanie and it’s been two hours since I last kissed Zachary.”

The afternoon passed so slowly; Melanie wondered if the clock on the wall needed a new battery. Zachary kept his head down, eyes glued to his computer, and Jenna kept shooting Melanie warning looks every five minutes. She chewed the inside of her cheek, wondering how she could work with Zachary on investigating the mystery. If Luis was right and there were fake investor accounts, she needed to find and report them, before the top management demand her resignation.

Working in finance, everyone had to attend classes once a year to brush up on financial law. From data protection to money laundering and fraud. But she had taken none of it seriously, thinking that only people in crime shows launder money.

It never happened in real life. At least, that was what naïve Melanie thought. Now, it looked like Luis had been framed in a scandal and just before he was about to whistle blow on it, he died.

She shook the thoughts from her mind with her eyes shut. Imagining that there was somebody out there who had wanted Luis dead made it very likely that she was in trouble too.

“You look miserable. Time to pack up, we’re going shopping.”

Melanie jumped and looked up at Jenna’s warm smile.

“Shopping?” she repeated. Her eyes flickered to Zachary’s back, but he remained seated at his desk while the rest of the workers left the office. Then she looked back at Jenna who had begun listing off the things they needed to buy with her fingers.

“We need new clothes, toiletries, make up… Everything.”

Melanie hummed with agreement. “And a new place to live.
