LESS-TOXIC CONTROLS

May stay in bounds in drier or well-drained ground; otherwise, confine individual plants to a deep bottomless container or grow aboveground in an ample pot. To eradicate unwanted plants, dig out entire rootstock, preferably while the plants are still young and the project is not impossible.

CHEMICAL CONTROLS

Spray with an herbicide labeled for bamboo control, following label instructions to the letter regarding timing and proper application.

Arundo donax

Giant reed

A huge, dramatic plant that is sometimes mistaken for a bamboo although technically it is a perennial grass. Blue-greenish leaves alternate up strong, hollow, upright stems that are 1 to 1½ inches in diameter. Leaves are narrow, flat, and droopy, resembling, at first glance, corn foliage, measuring up to 3 feet long and 1 to 3 inches wide. Technically a big panicle, the late-summer plumes begin reddish brown, and then turn white. A single panicle may be as long as 2 feet. Roots are creeping, knotty rhizomes. Prospers in moist, well-drained soil. Mature plants easily reach 12 to 20 feet high.
