A ½-inch graph will help isolate the shapes and make them easier to draw.

Be sure all of your shapes are accurate before removing your graph.

Step 1 ACCURATE LINE DRAWING

In this line drawing, notice how the shadow shape under the eye has been drawn in. Also, notice the area below the iris, or number ten on the diagram. This shows that the lower eyelid has thickness to it, and the bottom of the eye is not just to be outlined. Look at someone’s eye right now, and you will see this detail. It is an extremely important element, and is almost always left out in beginners’ drawings. If you go back to the beginning of this book and look at the students’ early work, you will find their first attempts did not include the lower lid.
