3-10. When working in copperfoil but framing in lead came, zinc, or brass channel, allow for the greater amount of space taken up by the heart and flange of the came or channel than would be true of copperfoil or solder Take a measurement of the “dead” space, and start the design by first drawing in a frame of that dimension.

You may want to surround a copperfoil panel with a zinc border to add rigidity (and structural strength), or, with an end lead, to cushion shocks (for example, on swinging doors and cabinets). If you do so, it will affect the measurements and the way you lay out the design (fig. 3-10). If you plan to work with zinc, consider buying a zinc notching machine, such as the one made by Jarmac Inc., and a Glascor Mini Miter saw by DuPage Precision Products. These items can be ordered through your local stained glass supplier.
