Library Science
Although the types of materials on library shelves have basically remained unchanged over the years, the nature of library services has been profoundly altered by the onset of modern technology.19 Librarians have evolved into information specialists who help their patrons locate information on the Internet, via digital databases, and through virtual and remote access.
In general, librarians oversee libraries and help patrons find information. They also acquire, preserve, and catalog information and handle archives. Librarians can specialize in a particular area such as medicine, law, government, fine art, rare books, music, maps, and film/video. In colleges and universities librarians often teach information literacy to students: how to find, evaluate, and use information from print and online sources. At public libraries librarians often work with and provide programs for specific groups of people such as children, senior citizens, the unemployed, prisoners, the homeless, and visually or hearing impaired individuals.
Librarians can find employment with local government, college and university libraries, elementary and secondary school libraries, cities and county library systems, hospitals, and corporations as research consultants. Librarians can apply their information managements and research skills outside of the library as database development trainers and managers, and media specialists. Freelance librarians can become information brokers or document delivery specialists who provide services to other libraries, businesses, or government agencies.
The appropriate professional degree for a librarian is a master of library and information science (MLIS). Entry-level positions such as library clerks, assistants, and technicians typically do not require an MLIS degree. Indeed.com reports that the average salary for library scientists nationally is $57,000.20
