Year 1970

Cadence must have fallen pretty hard since whatever happened that allowed me to locate her. Watching her was like watching paint dry on a canvas. She never spoke about curses mainly because she was always alone. No one ever visited her in that dirty apartment she was staying in. When she went to get food, it was always from a large store, and it was always something she could eat from a container.

She had a job, sort of. She had a table set up on a busy street offering tarot card readings. Not many people stopped by her table, and she left a hat in front of it for people to throw change into. Had she really alienated every coven that no one was offering her protection? No one was offering her food to eat?

I didn’t feel sorry for her. I’d been dealing with her curse way too long and I hadn’t forgotten she cursed my grandparents and several members of my old coven. It seemed like all I was doing was watching sad Cadence eat sad food and never mention anything about her curses.

“Hard to believe this pathetic bitch caused so much trouble. She’s not even reading the cards right when she does manage to get a customer.”

“Should we kick her while she’s down? If I can get the astral projection down, do you think I could get her to remove all the curses by promising her a blessing? It looks like whoever was hiding her booted her out without any blessing. Think she’s desperate enough to make a deal?”

“Don’t make deals with bitches, Catarina. Every basic bitch knows this. It doesn’t matter how down she is, she’ll bite you like a rabid dog.”

“Well, she doesn’t even know we are watching and we’ve got nothing because no one wants to talk to her. What am I supposed to do if she won’t talk and I can’t make a deal with her?”

“Go back to the plotting board and learn more Santtu magic. We know this is the right path. The answer will come to you when the time is right. We’re playing the long game, remember? You’ve almost got astral projection down. I think you’ll get it on the next attempt. Once you’ve got it down, you can just search that shit hole she calls a living space while she’s got her table set up.”

“Just like that? When I nail it, I can just go though her things and see if she has a Book of Shadows on curses?”

“I’m guessing her Book of Shadows was left in the rubble of her hut when she fled, but she might have notes on the various curses.”

“I want to search her apartment tomorrow. I think I can do it this time.”

“Now that you’ve got a fire lit under your ass, probably. Go home and get some rest. We’ll start early in the morning.”
