Most of the above materials have some kind of protective finish that needs maintenance or topping up periodically. Letâs take a look at the specific things you can do to a few different materialsâ¦
Proper Preparation
Iâll put this here, before we look at specific materials as the principles are similar whether youâre maintaining a wall, woodwork, or a metal gutter. Preparation is critical, just slapping on new stuff simply wonât protect the material, even if it looks good initially. Generallyâ¦
Scrape away any old flaky layers of old paint.
Clean paintwork with a âhouse cleanerâ detergent, with a mould killer element if there are green of black spores on the paintwork.
A bucket of cleaner and another of clean water and a couple of sponges work well indoors. Wipe over with one sponge and detergent and ârinseâ with the other sponge and clean water. Outdoors, careful use of a pressure washer to pump cleaner onto the paintwork works well (donât go too close). Scrub with a small brush on a long handle and afterwards rinse everything away being careful with the angle you use (avoid getting water behind anything), mimic how the rain would hit the surface to be safe. Allow plenty of time for everything to dry.
Sand down the surface, removing any âshineâ to provide a rock-solid base (called âkeyâ) for new coatings.
Use a suitable primer on any bare areas, maybe even two coats. Lightly sand with a fine sandpaper to flatten again.
The final sanding grade should be 120/180 grit (or finer) otherwise the scratch marks may show through the final finish.
Apply the finish coats flowing the manufacturerâs instructions (usually two for best durability).
Lightly sand in between coats with fine sandpaper and work in a super clean environment for time consuming, but glass smooth results.
