Box-and-whisker plots: How they work

Note: You might find versions of this plot with * or a dot above and below the maximum and minimum values. Values that are further away than 1.5 times the IQR (+/- the upper/ lower quartile) are classified as outliers. Software packages define the maximum and minimum values in different ways. Be sure to clarify how yours are defined.

Box-and-whisker plots can be used to compare the distributions of several variables in one go. Here, the distributions of three diastolic blood pressure measurements recorded from 100 patients using a manual monitor are illustrated.
