I worked all weekend at different substations. Four people: an eighteen-year-old girl with a black, bloody eye and a two-week-old baby; a twenty-year-old named Destiny with two little girls, aged four and two, pregnant again, with the same man beating her since she was sixteen; a forty-three-year-old woman with a very large swollen black eye; and a male sex offender who is abused by his wife of thirty-seven years—she spits on him.

This is my world. I am comfortable here. The people I speak with seem calmer, less scared than when I first met them, at least at that moment. Who knows what their future holds?

I’ve been letting it all go today by driving a lot. I had a lot to get done today, but all I could do was drive. Writing and driving. Two things I must do when the need arises. I drive. I think. I write.
