Most of this art was the work of Jacopo Tintoretto (a nickname taken from his father’s occupation: a dyer, or tintore). A younger contemporary of Titian, he was a homegrown Venetian favourite, who spent some twenty years between the 1560s and 1580s under commission to the brotherhood, decorating their meeting-house with over fifty paintings. His most famous image in the building was painted for the room where the organisation’s governing council met: a vast scene, almost forty feet across, of the crucifixion of Jesus.
