SCREW PINE
BOTANICAL NAME: Pandanus veitchii
The screw pine is a large plant with spines along the leaves. It grows very large and would need plenty of space in a home. The variety Pandanus veitchii, now available to the consumer, is a beautiful yellow variegated version with multiple crowns. These are free of spines and are offered at about 18 inches (45.7 cm) high. They make a very nice foil to plain-green plants. They are relatively slow growers, and do not have the usual spiraling form of the regular screw pines.
LIGHT PREFERENCE: In the home setting, the screw pine needs to be placed in high light such as in front of a south window.
WATERING: Keep the screw pine evenly moist. It naturally grows in moist areas.
FLOWER: It most likely will not bloom in your home but does produce flowers, which, in turn, produce fruits that resemble orange pinecones.
SIZE: These can become large trees in the wild, up to 20 feet (6.1 m) tall or more. The newer cultivars will probably not grow taller than a few feet, and they are choice plants for displaying on a pedestal or plinth.
PROPAGATION: Propagate by offsets at the base of the plant.
