TOOLS AND MATERIALS

As sewing starts to take over your life you will be exposed to all kinds of wonderful and useful sewing tools. Some will give you lightbulb moments while others aren’t any different from using household items. Picking the right tools is a very individual process. I have listed a selection of essential items I have found useful on my sewing journey, alongside your trusty sewing machine, of course!

NEEDLES AND PINS

You will need a good selection of needles for hand sewing and machine sewing. Make sure you always match your needles to the fabric you are using: as a guide I use 75/11, 70/10, 65/9 or 60/8 for machine sewing delicate fabrics. I use 80/12, 90/14 for medium weight fabrics and 100/16, 110/18 or 120/20 for heavy weight fabrics.

The same is true for pins – a good selection in different sizes and lengths is essential. Glass heads are great for general use, I use ball point pins for knit fabrics, and silk pins for delicates. Quilting pins are also really useful when you are working on bulky projects.
