The footsteps came to a stop outside Leanne's bedroom. She feigned a snore in order to give the illusion that she was still sleeping, so as to trick whoever was on the other side. Whoever? She knew exactly who it was – the same person who'd been sneaking past her room every night for the last two weeks. The same person who'd suddenly opted to sleep alone – to carry out some clandestine operation, always a few minutes before the stroke of midnight.

Leanne waited until she heard Melissa's footsteps descend the stairs before she stopped fake snoring. This was how she'd been doing it every night since the sneaking had begun; Melissa was none the wiser. Then she listened for the click of the back door, which followed several seconds later. Again, everything went the same. Melissa was like clockwork; she never went anywhere else but into the garden.

Every night, Leanne told herself that this would be the night when she followed her, catching her in the act (whatever that was), thereby putting an end to the secretiveness. And every night she sat on the edge of her bed, swinging her legs, building the courage to do it, half wanting to know and half afraid of what she'd find. Afraid that there was someone else on the scene – someone Melissa didn't have reservations about. Someone unlike Leanne.

But that night, sick of wondering, fed up of jumping to wild conclusions, she figured not knowing was worse than knowing. That night, she decided enough was enough.

A couple more minutes went by before Leanne pulled herself from bed, slipped into her dressing gown and headed downstairs.

I'll be gone five minutes tops, so the kids will be fine, she assured herself. Telling herself that this also affected them acted as her justification for leaving them alone.

The air was cold and bitter when she stepped into the garden. The bitterness, like the smell of burning charcoal. So distinct, so close that it gave her cause for concern. It had to have been coming from her garden.

Leanne had never roamed the full extent of the grounds in all the time she'd lived in the mansion, owing to its size. One could easily get lost in it if one wasn't familiar with the landscape. The fact that a forest lay at the far end of it made the task all the more daunting; getting lost in a garden was one thing, but getting lost in a garden that merged into a forest was quite another.

The night's melody – a chorus of cricket chirps coupled with the whistle of the wind as it rustled through the leaves – followed her as she padded across the rich, crunchy grass. She journeyed through the garden, a woman on a mission, unsure of what she'd find when she reached her end. All the while her pulse raced with every tentative step, her anxiety increasing as she got deeper into the dark expanse.

She heard laughter. She'd only been walking a minute or so.
