Zack eyed the mountain of clothes on his bed with increasing alarm. “This is hopeless, isn’t it?” He nudged another pile next to his dresser with his foot. Maybe if he just kept poking at it, an acceptable date outfit would present itself.

“Don’t give up. We got this,” said a stereo version of Kira’s voice, emanating from Zack’s phone. “What about that one outfit you love to wear when we go out?”

“That’s what I was wearing the night I met him.” Zack grabbed a black sweater and held it up to his chest.

“You think he’ll remember it?”

“Probably not, but if he did, it’d be humiliating. I’d rather not risk it.” He turned to his mirror and gave himself a cursory examination. He looked like a pretentious art student. He chucked the sweater back into the pile. “What the hell do people wear on dates?”

Kira laughed. “Like you’ve never been on a date before.”

“It’s been forever,” Zack protested, “and I used to just throw on whatever I had lying around. I’ve never tried to make an impression before.”

“That’s a good point. Plus, we know for a fact that John spends time and money on his wardrobe. If you don’t look good, he’ll definitely notice.”

“Thank you, Kira,” Zack replied tartly. “That’s just what I needed to hear right now. I wasn’t nearly anxious enough before.”

“Sorry, but it’s true. What about the red jacket I got you for your birthday? With a black shirt?”

Zack stopped to consider it. “That might work, though I was wearing black the past two times I saw him.”

“Then wear it with a white shirt, darling.”

“Right. Sorry, I’m just nervous.”

“I know you are, but don’t be. You two already know way more about each other than what you learn on your standard first date. This is going to go fantastically no matter what you wear.” She paused. “Though you should still make an effort. I won’t have my Zackary looking underdressed.”

Zack snorted and dug in the back of his closet. He extracted a wine-red jacket made of supple leather with a wide collar and a silver zipper running down the front. He usually saved it for special occasions—partly because it was from Kira and partly because it was one of the few nice things he owned—and tonight certainly qualified. He held it up to himself and whistled.

“Oh yeah,” he said as he studied his reflection, “this is perfect.”

“Excellent choice. Wear it with dark jeans. You’ll look like an Italian James Dean.”

“You know James Dean died a tragic, fiery death, right?”

“Shut up and strip.”

“Fine.” Zack set about divesting himself of his clothing.

“So, where are you guys meeting?”

“At some swanky bar north of Melrose, though he offered to come get me.”

“But you said no because you’re too smart for that, right?”

“Sure,” Zack said. “But just for fun, explain why that’s not smart.”

Kira huffed. “C’mon, Zack, it’s Dating 101. You never let a guy pick you up, even if you are one. What if you realize you can’t stand him and want to leave?”

“I could always jump out of the car.
