“Why are you eating directly out of a carton of chocolate ice cream?”

Julie took her spoon out of her mouth as Harry walked into the kitchen the next morning. “Because I’ve finished off Bas’s cookies. What did you find out from Marguerite?”

“Nothing, but the Guardians have determined that Tasha and Luc were in Chicago with your mother.”

“Chicago? Why? How do they know that?”

“Powerful Sensitives.” Harry walked up to her, took the carton out of her hands and put it on the kitchen table. She let him, her mind busy with trying to figure out why Tash was in Chicago. “Is she still there? Can those Sensitives find her?”

“I’ll tell you everything in a moment.” Harry pulled her into his arms and Julie felt some of the tenseness drain from her muscles. Her ear rested over the steady beat of his heart, and she breathed deeply, the scent of him filling her.

“I’m going to smear chocolate on your white shirt.”

“I don’t care.”

The phone rang, and Julie jumped back out of his arms and grabbed it from the table beside her. Since Tash had disappeared, she was never without it.

Her mother’s number flashed on the face. “Mom!”

“Julie, honey.” Her mother’s blessed voice rushed through the phone receiver.

“Where are you? Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. I’m sorry I’ve been out of touch. Everything has been chaotic here. I’m at my apartment but only for half a second. Is Harrison with you?”

“Yes. Mom, Tasha’s missing. Have you seen her?”

“The Gigis have been looking nonstop for her. I just got a call from Phyllis, who thinks she’s finally located the local Gate of Gehenna. I’m heading there now with the rest of the Gigis. We’re going to bust that Gate wide open.” Julie could hear an excited buzz in the background. “I wanted to keep you and Harrison in the loop. I’ll call as soon as I can.” Her mother hung up.

“She hung up.” Julie stared at the phone in disbelief and hit the redial button. “She said something about searching for Tasha, gates to Gehenna and getting Tash out.” The phone clicked to her mother’s answering machine.

Harry’s calm voice broke through her confusion. “I spoke with Linda, who’s with your mom. Tasha and Luc have been kidnapped by Skaven—rat people who work for the demons—and taken to Gehenna. Jean has sent out a message to all Triad in the area to gather. She’s going to attempt to meld power and wield enough energy to break through to Gehenna.”

At Julie’s confused look, he clarified. “Gehenna is a name for Hell.”

Julie sank down into one of the chairs at the kitchen table. “Rat people?” She jumped up again. “Demons want Tasha? Why?”

“Linda thinks it was a mistake on the part of the Skaven. The demons aren’t stupid enough to totally flout all laws by taking a living Dancer and Shadow Walker. The entire Triad is up in arms. This kidnapping is uniting us in a way we haven’t been since the Rift.”

She frowned at his positive spin on the whole nightmare.
