Despair was clearly written on every face. Meanwhile, ECOMOG, in their attempt to create what they called a buffer zone, seemed to have increased their offensive against the rebels at the war-front. When such information reached our guards in Flamingo Camp, they were outraged and wondered why we were being kept alive. Sometimes in blood-thirstiness they came shouting, “If my rifle has not been allowed to drink blood, at least I must wash my hands in some.” With that they would grab any man they chose, get out their knives and tattoo his chest in letters with deep cuts and then dabble their hands in his blood and rubbing some in their hair and faces.
