On my first five safaris, I never saw an African wild dog. So, for my sixth safari, I planned carefully. I went to a game reserve in South Africa known for its roaming packs of wild dogs.

The reserve is near the border of Botswana. I arrived there in the middle of winter. It was really, really cold. Usually on safari I might have to wear a jacket before the sun comes up. But this time I wore a coat the whole time. Being so cold in Africa was a surprise.

Both African wild dogs and your family pet dog are members of the group of animals known as canines (sounds like KAY-nines). This group also includes foxes, coyotes, and wolves. All of the 36 members of the canine family are alike in some ways. They all hunt by running down their prey. And they all have excellent senses of smell and hearing. Pet dogs don’t have to hunt for food, and they probably love tennis balls more than any African wild dog ever would!
