Chapter Five

A SMALL HAND SLIDES into the pocket and encloses around me. The burn of the iron ring makes me gasp, and then I am free from the pocket and staring into the angry eyes of the leader of the lost boys: Peter Pan.

Two burly men stand behind Peter wearing officer uniforms. Peter has a dagger pressed to the captain’s chest, and he gives me such a dark look that my mouth dries in fear.

“You don’t have to speak. I’m sure it’s been an awful experience being the captain’s captive,” Peter says to me.

His eyes are full of malice, and the warning is clear. If I deny what he says, whether the authorities are here or not, he will kill the captain.

I nod helplessly as the stench of my burning flesh surrounds me. The little shit wore that ring with the purpose of hurting me.

Peter steps away from Elijah, pocketing the knife before turning to the authorities. “Take him away.”

The men each take one of the captain’s arms and lift his unconscious form from the chair. His legs have mean-looking shackles that rattle as they drag him away.

The door closes, and now it’s just Peter and me.

“Please don’t hurt him,” I beg.

His eyes narrow. “It’s not up to me. He’ll be tried for his crimes.”

“He hasn’t done anything!” But as soon as the words fall from my lips, I know it doesn’t matter. Peter has spun his lies once again.

“Oh, is that so?” He stares me down. “According to some very reliable sources, the captain abused a lot of boys in the most heinous of ways and then stole their fae to keep as his own captive. He’s killed, maimed, murdered, all in the name of piracy.” Peter grins. “Your good captain should be sentenced before the sun sets.”

My chest squeezes, hard enough for me to choke. He must see my pain because he laughs.

“Please, I’ll do anything if you set him free.” My desperation bleeds through with every word.

His laugh fades, and he stares at me, rubbing his jaw as my words sink in. “Anything?”

I nod. I know what they do with criminals in this land. They hang until they are no longer alive or are flayed to death at a post for the entire community to watch. Peter has sent too many people to their deaths with his lies, and he glories in the brutality of the punishments. I swear, if he had a choice, he would be the one swinging the whip. I don’t want to see Elijah killed for saving me.

Peter reaches into a bag on the floor by the door and pulls out another cage. This one is smaller and has chains hanging from the top and on the floor. “Promise me you will always serve the lost boys.” He caresses my wings in a way that makes my stomach roll.

“Only if you promise to set Elijah free.”

His eyebrow rises, and he seems to consider my request. Just when I think he is going to ignore my plea, he nods.
