The Struggle Is Necessary

Unfortunately, the Devil’s play is often distraction. He wants to draw you away from God’s good plans for your homeschool by making you feel defeated in the midst of them. He wants your fears and faults to take center stage. Remember Christ’s words, and let them talk you off the ledge: “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33 NIV, emphasis added). That but is the bridge that spans the gap between a test and a testimony. It’s what turns a victim into a victory.

Just like you, your kids are going to have fears and faults too. And dare I say it, they’re going to fail—in school, at work, in relationships. Failure is part of the deal of living. Don’t deprive your struggling one of failure. That’s how he’ll grow. That’s how he’ll learn. No one ever learns nearly as much from the good stuff of life. We all learn most when we’re allowed to try, fail, and get back up again.

Although it’s hard to watch the struggle, especially when help is within reach, remember this: God didn’t miss a stitch when He knit your child together. In praying that He keep all the hard things away from your struggling one or even expecting that He will answer such a request, you are denying your child the opportunity to be sanctified. In fact, according to 1 Thessalonians 4:3, you are robbing him of the very will of God. That’s not to say that sanctification only ever comes through struggle, but that it often does. When your kids are allowed to struggle and see God working, they begin to stretch their own faith wings. Without the struggle, there would be no flight.

Remember the butterfly from my son’s science project? He (or was it a she? Who can know?) took off with a perfect dismount from the branch. It took some time. It definitely took some struggle. But eventually, its wings did what they were designed to do. They flew. Had my son or I helped—had we removed any part of the difficult process—the butterfly would surely have died. The struggle was necessary. Christ’s struggle was necessary. And perhaps your struggle is necessary too. But stay tuned—the good flight is coming!
