8.4 Holographic Photopolymers

8.4.1 Introduction

Photopolymers show great promise as a holographic recording material. This is due to the ability to optimize the components of the polymer for different applications; manufacture them in large formats at low cost; and the availability of dry processing methods. Early theoretical and experimental work on holographic photopolymers was conducted by Close et al. in 1969 [82] followed by Colburn and Haines [83] in 1971, and Booth [84] and Wopschall and Pampalone [85] in 1972 at DuPont Laboratories. Calixto later set the foundations for realizing dry processed polymers that have higher diffraction efficiencies that are still in use today [86].
