The Long and Short of Planning in Schools

Figure 9.1 maps the interdependencies between the short-term and long-term poles.

Figure 9.1: The short-term and long-term loop.

Compounding the difficulty of this interdependency is the fact that each of us is naturally wired to think either six to twelve months out or three to five years out when someone says, “Long term” (Kise, 2017). Look back at the opening questions in A Focus on Tomorrow While Thinking Five Years Ahead (page 116). Which way do you lean? Again, leadership requires leveraging the upsides of both poles. As an easy example, the commutative property of multiplication is one of those big concepts schools often teach through worksheets or drills—short-term strategies. However, teaching addition strategies beyond the common algorithm is time-consuming even though it improves long-term results. But, it becomes worth remembering if we introduce the commutative property, and show students how useful it is for solving problems such as the one in figure 9.2.

Let’s look at two key interdependencies that can help focus the bigger dilemma of making short-term progress while keeping our eyes on the long-term prizes: (1) now and later and (2) the urgent and the important.
