The Korean War
The Korean War (25 June 1950 to 27 July 1953) was fought between North Korea, with the support of China and the Soviet Union, and South Korea with the support of 21 member countries of the United Nations (UN), principally the USA but including the UK, Royal Canadian, Royal Australian and Royal New Zealand forces. Two days after North Korea invaded South Korea on 25 June 1950 the UN sent a combined NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) fleet and troops in their support, while China assisted North Korea with Soviet Union help.
Korea had been ruled by Imperial Japan from 1910 until, in August 1945, the Soviet Union declared war on it. As a result it was agreed that the Soviet Union would liberate Korea north of the 38th parallel while US forces subsequently would move into the south. By 1948, as a product of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the USA, Korea was divided into two regions with separate governments. Both claimed to be the legitimate government of all of Korea, and neither accepted the border as permanent. On 27 June, the United Nations Security Council authorised UN forces to repel a North Korean invasion.
SHIPS THAT SERVED WITH HMS BELFAST IN KOREAN WATERS
HMS Belfast was part of Britain’s naval contribution to implement the UN’s decision to stop the invasion of South Korea by North Korea. The size and international nature of the intervention is shown by this list in the ship’s commission record of US, Dutch, New Zealand, Australian, Canadian and British warships and Republic of Korea patrol craft that operated at the same time as HMS Belfast in Korean waters; as did the aircraft carriers HMS Theseus, Glory, Ocean and HMAS Sydney.
