It turned out Patricia Marche lived almost six hours away, but at least it was back in the direction they’d come from. Theoretically, that meant once this little demon problem was dealt with, Sean would have less time all alone in his car to dwell on what had happened over the last few days.

When they stopped for gas, Sean’s whole body was so tense he had to stretch for a while for fear of cramping up. While he was bent over and reaching for his toes, he heard Gideon get out of the car. “I may as well have a look at their snacks. Would you like me to get you anything?”

Sean gaped at his toes. Not only was Gideon lowering himself to eating “rubbish” human food, but he was offering to do Sean a favor in the process? “Uh…sure,” he said, doing his best to keep the shock out of his voice. “Maybe some gummy worms or something?”

Gideon nodded and disappeared into the gas station, and Sean went to fuel up his car with a shake of his head. This guy was full of surprises. What next? A detour to stop at the world’s biggest ball of twine?

The weird thing was, the idea of visiting a roadside attraction with Gideon was…not that bad, really. Sure, Gideon would probably be bitterly sarcastic and mock every aspect of the experience, especially the ones Sean liked, but at the same time it might be nice, in a way, to spend time together just because they wanted to spend time together, not because they didn’t have a choice. Would Gideon be able to come back and visit him after he was…banished, or whatever? Would they be able to stay in touch?

Thankfully, the thunk of the gas pump stopping jarred him out of those ridiculous thoughts. It was time to focus on getting rid of the demon, not figuring out how to stay pen-pals with him. He jammed the nozzle back into place and frowned at his reflection in the car’s dirt-streaked window; his cloudy face stared back at him, looking tired and confused and just a little bit heartbroken.

With an exasperated groan, he turned and stomped off toward the gas station. Maybe some caffeine would help.

He passed Gideon at the door, holding a couple bags of chips and a bag of gummy worms, which he waved cheerfully in Sean’s direction. Sean gave him a quick smile and thumbs-up as he walked in the door.

Sean looked around for the energy drinks, and his eyes landed on a disheveled man standing behind the counter. He was about Sean’s height but looked shrunken in on himself, his shoulders rounded and back slightly hunched. The man’s eyes flew wide open, sunken and red in a bloodless face, and he waved his hands frantically in front of him. “Take whatever you want, please,” he called out, his voice tight and wavering. “Please, just go!”

Sean glanced over his shoulder for anyone else he might be talking to, but they were alone in the store.
