CHAPTER SEVEN
LETâS TALK ABOUT ANXIETY
Iâm still a really big worrier. I worry so much. I can build up a whole scenario in my head that might not ever happen but it can stay in my head all day. You can imagine how frustrating that is. In fact, Iâm sure some of you donât have to imagine because youâre probably in the same boat.
The great thing in this day and age is that everyone talks more openly about suffering from anxiety or depression or whatever it may be, and by talking about it openly weâre helping each other. I love that.
These days, instead of me sitting there worrying myself silly, Iâll grab Minkeh or Buddy and clean instead of thinking too much. Iâm cleaning out my mind while Iâm hinching the house or the car or understairs cupboard. Itâs a real release for me. Some people go to the gym or they bake cakes, and thatâs what helps to ease their whirring minds. For me, itâs cleaning.
I think a lot of people assume I have OCD, but I donât. I just genuinely enjoy cleaning, organising and feeling good in my home. When the house has been hinched and my wax melts are filling the house with my favourite smells, thereâs no better feeling for me. I relax and switch off and itâs almost like a mini therapy session.
Weâve all got things weâre dealing with, itâs a part of life, and itâs all about finding ways to manage whatever it is weâre struggling with. For me, cleaning is something Iâve discovered makes me happy.
If someone thinks thatâs sad, then thatâs fine. Iâm okay with that. When youâre doing something you love and achieving a happy outcome at the end of it, like I do with cleaning, it gives your self-esteem a boost, and that can only be a positive thing.
I thought it was just me who felt like that but now I realise how many men and women out there live with anxiety or panic attacks. We are not alone any more. So many people have said that theyâve discovered cleaning has helped them beyond belief, and itâs really helped to turn things around for them. It means the world to me to think I may have been a small part of that. If I could share even a handful of the messages I receive on a daily basis then the world would see just how much we all have in common. Please never feel ashamed. Iâm âquirkyâ and a little âout thereâ apparently, but who cares! Thatâs me! We should all be proud of who we are. If I can get over a million followers for being myself ⦠then anyone can!
Now donât get me wrong, itâs not all rainbows and sunshine having such a large Instagram account. I still get comments online from people who say itâs not healthy for me to be promoting OCD, but thatâs not the case at all and it isnât the source of my panic.
