Bart Ehrman’s View of the Four Gospels
By Kyle Larson
Now that we've debunked the myth of an unreliable oral tradition between the original events depicted and the writing of the Gospel texts, we need to look at establishing the authorship of the Gospels. Were they truly written by the traditional authors? Or, are some, in whole or in part, merely apocryphal accounts fabricated by some well meaning, overzealous believer? Dr. Bart Ehrman, in his book, very plainly denies that the Gospel accounts we have today are based on eyewitness testimony. This leaves us with the impression that the Gospels are, to at least some extent, not based on actual history.
There are several reasons why he believes this. Second, he doubts the accuracy of the external evidence concerning the testimony of the church fathers. Dr. Ehrman believes that the church fathers' testimony comes too late. In his view, so much time had passed between the writing of the Gospels and the time of the church fathers that the church fathers couldn't accurately ascertain who wrote the Gospels (107). Third, Ehrman further states that no one really knew who wrote the Gospels because the Gospel writers, in fact, wrote anonymously (111).
Ehrman makes the following statement concerning the supposed illiteracy of the twelve Apostles:
