Do you have a friend who is always letting you down? Why are you still friends? Do you think it’s their problem or yours? Why?

Seeing Through Time

I’M WAITING UNTIL the time is right.

You’ve heard people say those words and you’ve probably said them yourself. Honestly? I’ve said them, too. I always want to reach the next level, but I can find a million reasons why I’m not ready to make the push to get there.

Staying put was exactly what I had in mind in 2001 when I bought a building for my business. It was a historic turn-of-the-century brick warehouse in downtown Atlanta. I loved the character of the old property and its central location. But I knew it had some major shortcomings. It didn’t have enough storage space, parking, or room to create all my projects. Neighbors complained about the lights, noise, and traffic. They were annoyed that my employees were taking up precious parking spaces on the street. Plus, the neighborhood was a little rough, and almost every morning I would drive up to find new gang graffiti scrawled across the building. I owned the property outright, but soon I knew my business was outgrowing the building. It was bursting at the seams! There was more going on than the walls could handle. Still, even with all these issues, I wanted to hang on.

The problems kept intensifying, and one day my lawyer called and strongly suggested that I take a look at Greenbriar Campus. The property consisted of several buildings on a sixty-acre lot that was only around twenty minutes from Atlanta’s downtown.

When I first drove up to Greenbriar Campus, I didn’t even get out of my truck. “No way!” I said to myself. “Who needs all this?” In that moment, I couldn’t fathom what I would do with all that property. I didn’t want to make the push.

I turned the key and drove off, not even taking a second glance in my rearview mirror.

But that night I couldn’t sleep. Suddenly my mind was ready to wrestle with the potential, and my soul, sparked by my imagination, started praying about the possibilities. Unable to sleep because my mind was racing a mile a minute, I got in my truck and drove through the pitch dark back to Greenbriar Campus.

I pulled up to the property and just sat there with the headlights on for a few minutes, stunned that I’d found myself back here. Then I got out, walked up to the wrought iron gate, saw it was padlocked with a thick chain, tried it with no luck, and stood still, quietly peering through the gate.

It was a scene out of an apocalyptic movie. Silver paint peeled and unfurled like tape off the main building. Weeds grew with such maniacal tenacity, they wound and weaved and reached the tops of the windows and doors. Old newspapers, bottles, plastic bags, and Styrofoam cups were scattered everywhere.

In the dead of night, with a cacophony of crickets chirping, my mind continued to race with possibilities.
