It was early in 1980 and my living situation was getting complicated. The cultural anthropologists returned from New Guinea and reclaimed their Hell's Kitchen apartment. Amanda and I had nowhere to live during the four months before we went to the Manú for my dissertation year. My friend Fran Frummer, who had so kindly maneuvered my meeting with the dean of the New School to process my first grant, agreed to take us in. Fran, her husband, and their two daughters lived in the Bronx. Amanda enjoyed playing with Meredith and Megan. The monkeys were kept in large cages at City College, thanks to Dr. Kinzey's help, and it was a close commute to care for them from the Bronx.

After two months with six people in a two-bedroom apartment in the Bronx, Amanda and I moved out of the Bronx and to Hoboken, New Jersey, to live in the basement of my friend Lisa Forman's four-story brownstone. We slept in sleeping bags on blown-up air mattresses. Tossed from friend to friend, living on couches and in basements, was not the best living situation for a child, but I felt that I had no choice.

“Are we really going to have our own house someday?” Amanda would ask.

I would laugh and repeat her song, “A house, a horse, monkeys, and chocolate, of course. Yes, Amanda, as soon as I finish my dissertation, I will find a job and we'll settle down.”

I desperately hoped my optimistic prediction would come true. I hoped deep in my heart that I was not lying to my child.
