The more Bill talked, the more excited he became. And he had used the phrase “love at first sound” to describe what he felt when he first heard Buddy’s music—just like Taryn.
“These Rock & Roll shows back then were amazing! Like I said, ninety cents for sixteen acts and on top of it, the first two hundred people got a free record!” he exclaimed in a very excited voice. “The show was held at the State Theater. The State held 4,100 people and the house was packed!”
“Out of all those acts, why did Buddy stand out for you?” I asked.
“Buddy was different from the rest,” replied Bill without missing a beat. “If you had a hit back then you would follow it up with a similar song in the same style. Not Buddy. He was too creative to do the same thing. He followed ‘That’ll Be The Day’ with ‘Peggy Sue’ and then ‘Oh Boy.’ All were quite different from each other.”
“So you were hooked,” I responded with a chuckle.
“I stayed in for the second and third show that day at the State Theater! If we had walked out into the alley to the stage door between shows, I could have met Buddy! They were all there at a desk signing autographs,” recalled Bill. “It is something I will always regret. I never got to meet him, but I witnessed a show that day that I’ll never forget.”
Fast forward to 1975.
“Buddy had been gone for sixteen years. I was disgusted that I was hearing nothing about him and could not find his records anywhere,” Bill complained. “Buddy’s songs were being covered extensively by others, but the Rock & Roll public had forgotten . . . or they were too young to know these songs were Buddy’s? His own performances and recordings of his songs were pushed aside by the British Invasion and all the music that followed.”
“The public in general has a short memory,” I agreed.
“Yes. And in response to that fact, I started the Buddy Holly Memorial Society. We began with four hundred and nineteen members in the first year,” said Bill. He was obviously proud of his accomplishment, as he should be. “It was so interesting. Fascinating, actually. People were joining from all over the world and they all expressed the same sentiment. Each person thought he or she was the last Buddy Holly fan on earth! Five years later the Buddy Holly Memorial Society had grown to five thousand and seven hundred members in thirty-four countries! This was all pre-Internet, of course, and pre-Buddy biographies.”
“Did you ever hold a convention?” I asked.
“We sure did. Our first convention was in Connecticut. And we just kept growing,” answered Bill. “The movie about Buddy Holly with Gary Busey, although totally inaccurate, showed people everywhere that there was this guy from Lubbock who wrote all the songs others were making careers upon. People learned that James Taylor didn’t write ‘Everyday,’ that Linda Ronstadt wasn’t the first to sing ‘It’s So Easy.’
