Jake’s heart sputtered at the size of the man in front of him. Angel. Whatever. Easily over seven feet tall and built like two brick shithouses stacked together on top of a third, the guy made everything on Jake clench. And wet itself.

He jumped in front Lia, using his body to shield her. As if he stood a chance against an angel twice his size. But the giant pushed him aside and snatched her, squeezing her against him.

“Liadiiin!”

With a laugh he’d never heard from her, Lia threw herself into the hug. “Big Rosie!”

Jake froze. What the hell was a big Rosie? And why was his girl grinning ear to ear and snuggling a guy who looked able to snack on rhinos? The dude’s hands slid down her sleek ponytail to grip her hips in an all too familiar way.

With a growl, Jake crossed his arms. “Not to be an insecure dick, but how about you take your mitts off my girl?” It came out impressively commanding. He hoped.

The big fucker, mitts still pawing Lia, swiveled his white blond head around to peer at him with icy green eyes. His wide mouth split into a grin.

“I heard you’d gone gaga over a fleshy. He’s adorable.” In a movement so quick Jake didn’t see it coming, his arm shot out and pulled Jake into a side hug. “No worries, human, I’ll make out with you next.”

Lia’s laughter was the only thing that kept him from reaching for his sidearm. That, and he wasn’t wearing it.

“Jake, meet big Rosie.”

A crushing squeeze punctuated Rosie’s, “Nice to meet you, man.”

“Big Rosie?” Jake asked, grateful he could speak at all with no air in his lungs. If Rosie squeezed any tighter, his shoulders would become conjoined twins.

“Roosevelt, if you prefer. My real name isn’t pronounceable to the mortal tongue.”

“Awesome. Can you let me go now?”

He was free an instant later, though he was sure it had more to do with Rosie’s interest in Lia than his request. The guy gave her a once over that made Jake consider punching him.

“You’re smokin’, girl. Always have been.” Rosie adjusted the collar on his blindingly bright, flowered shirt that looked like a thousand Hawaiian tourists had been sewn together in the bowels of Honolulu, and then pointed a finger at her. When he spoke again, his tone had dropped several degrees. “You’re not allowed to conjure us, Liadin.”

Lia flushed to a deep shade of pink. She yanked her braid over her shoulder and worried the end between her fingers. “I know, and I’m sorry. But you’re the only one that can help us.”

“I don’t kill, slayer, I collect.”

“Our problem is already dead.” She licked her lips, casting a nervous glance at Jake. He nodded his encouragement. This was her idea. No point in backing out now. Straightening to full height, she said, “I need you to reap a banshee.”

Rosie reared back. He scratched at his big head, sending his already spiked hair into a more disjointed mess. “Banshees are bad juju.
