And now, darling reader, I welcome you to the future…

Nine

Tin

Some people were born to be regular.

Alice DeSauvier wasn’t one of them.

It just wasn’t something she was capable of. She tried, I knew, but it just wasn’t doable. Everything about her was royal. From her haircut—a cascade of waves that were trimmed to hang just below her shoulders—to her clothes...

Even now, though she was heading into class, a class where other attending students wore slouchy jeans and tees, Alice wore a pencil skirt with a blouse tucked in at the waist. There was no denying that the navy pinstripe did things for her olive skin tone, and the crisp white shirt showcased her figure to perfection beneath a swinging peacoat that gave her a jaunty flair, but she looked like she was about to open a hospital.

No fucking joke.

Especially when I took in the high heels that no woman would wear for class—not unless she was trying to flirt with her professor, at any rate. While that might have been a possibility, I knew her schedule. Her next class, Art History, was taught by a woman, and Alice did not bat for the other team.

Not unless things had changed in the last two years anyway...

And I highly doubted that was the case.

Not because I had a big head which, admittedly, I did—literally—but because of the kind of connection we had. It didn’t go away. It couldn’t. And I’d tried. Many times. To no avail. But there was just no getting rid of the ties that bound us together. So no matter how much I’d angered her, upset her, or irritated the living shit out of her, I didn’t think I’d turned her gay.

As I studied her ass, which swayed thanks to her heels and tight skirt, I whistled under my breath, fully appreciating the sight and, slouching back in my seat, reached for my cell.

As I connected the call, I watched the outer doors to one of Madela’s most prestigious colleges swing to a close and settled in for a long conversation, as well as a long wait for Alice’s final class of the semester to end.

“Are you there?” My father’s face appeared on the screen. Ever serious, his brow was puckered as he stared at me. Dogs barked in the background, like usual, and they made me smile. Mum had a thing for Yorkies and, ever since I was a kid, we’d had a little pack wandering the grounds like they ruled the roost—which they totally did.

“No greeting for the prodigal son?”

“You have to return home to be the prodigal son.” My mother’s wry voice echoed in the background. “Far as I’m aware, you’re not here. If you were then I’m pretty sure the laundry would be overflowing, and the fridge would be empty.”

Within seconds, she was there, her warm eyes twinkling as she smiled at me. Sean moved his hand to cover hers which she rested on his shoulder, and the sight, as always, settled something inside me.

Five dads, one mum.
