Dear Pops,
Just received two letters from you Nos. 24, 27 dated July 8â20, and one from Mother of August 14. Wherefrom it is rather evident that C.P.S. is best way of sending the mail. Especially as, at present, since headquarters are being changed from Paris to London,333 everything is more or less upset. It is certainly too bad about G. Russell and Reed having been shot down. But I donât know which Reed you mean. Talking about dodging Archie, I saw for the first time a couple of days ago a machine hit and brought down out of control by Archie. It happened as we were escorting a number of day bombers, and it wasnât nice to see. Anyway Russellâs idea of avoiding it is wrong, I think, as it entirely a matter of luck, one may turn directly into a burst as well as away from it, and besides the first burst is always the best as you are unaware of it and have probably been going right straight along at a fixed altitude and speed for some time, so they have the range accurately after that, when you begin to turn, dive, or climb, as I say, it is all luck. I also had rather a disagreeable scrap a day or so ago, when eight of us met four Huns, some way across the lines. The disagreeable part came when, as I was diving unseen at one son of a gun, my doggone guns jammed after the first shot, and the first shot evidently missed and as, unless they have the advantage in numbers and height, they always spin down safely, one crack is all you get if you catch a few of them alone. My flight CO goes home to England on leave tomorrow or the next day, and says I am to lead his flight during his absence, which is pretty nice for me.334 I hope I donât lead them into any trouble. Well, cheerio, Pops
