Chapter Eleven
Devâs kiss felt perfect. Gentle and respectful, but not hesitant. He wanted to kiss her, really wanted to kiss her, and he let her know that with energy.
Emily relaxed into his arms, warmth spreading through her. How long had it been since someone had held her? She was used to being the caretaker, the teacher, the one responsible. Sheâd stopped thinking someone might take care of her, but that was what Devâs embrace felt like, and she loved it.
Lady settled at their feet with a gusty sigh.
He cupped her face as he kissed her, treating her as if she were precious and fragile. His hands were rough with work, yet so gentle as he brushed one over her hair and let his finger trace her jawline.
The kiss, the embrace, felt so new and so special that it chased rational thought from her mind. She hadnât been kissed for a long time, and she tried to remember the reason for it. There was a reason for it. She wasnât supposed to be kissing Dev.
But she couldnât thinkâshe could only feel. His touch, so tender, swept her worries straight out of her mind.
He lifted his lips from hers and looked at her, his brown eyes warm. âIs this okay?â
In some part of her mind she knew that the answer was no. It wasnât okay, but instead of focusing on that, she let her own fingers tangle in his hair. Springy, short, coarser than hers.
She felt so good being close to Dev like this. He was so tender, so caring. So much what she didnât deserve.
But she didnât want to think about that. Instead, she turned her head and rested her cheek against his chest and let him hold her, felt the breeze on her face, opened her eyes to drink in the beauty of their surroundings. He had brought her here. He had cared enough to want to show her this special place, to make her feel better, and it was good of him. He was good.
And then all the old feelings forced their way back into her heart. He might be good, but she wasnât. She wasnât supposed to feel this good, wasnât allowed to, wouldnât let herself. The small worries built up steam until she tugged away.
He let her go, but only after the slightest tightening of his hands told her he didnât want to let her go.
She didnât deserve a man who didnât want to let her go. The moment she left his arms, the rest of the old, bad feelings rushed back in.
She didnât deserve any of this.
She stood, and it felt like tearing herself away from the best thing that had ever happened to her, but she had to do it. âI have to go. We have to go. Right away.â
He stood and shook his head the way Lady shook off water. âWait. Can you slow down? Just a little?â
His voice magnetized her, and she knew if she didnât break away now, she wouldnât be able to, and that would be wrong.
