Wednesday morning passed quietly enough for Martha. The boys were getting gut at helping to get their beds and room straightened. Besides keeping her own room clean and neat, Lottie had several morning chores she’d been assigned—helping clean the kitchen, gathering the eggs with Dorcas and other little tasks Dorcas assigned her. Martha also made a point to ask the girl to help her groom Cinders every morning after her other chores were done. Martha decided to speak to Asher when she could catch him alone about whether the boys were old enough to start taking on some jobs in addition to keeping their rooms neat, as well. Maybe after the kinner were down for their naps this afternoon.

And she had some ideas of what those jobs might be.

But later as they pushed away from the lunch table, Asher turned to her. “Like I mentioned yesterday, I go to town every Wednesday afternoon to deliver whatever punched tin work I’ve completed for Noah and Charity.”

She felt a stab of disappointment, not only that she wouldn’t be able to speak to him as she’d hoped, but also that she wouldn’t be able to join him in his workshop this afternoon. Strange how, after only two days, she’d come to look forward to spending time there. It was only because the pierced tin work was so intriguing, of course.

“And while I’m at Noah’s workshop,” he added, “I thought that I’d go ahead and invite him to bring his familye here for lunch on Sunday.” He turned to Dorcas. “If you’re all right with it, that is.”

Oma gave him a broad smile. “I think that’s a wonderful gut idea. We haven’t had guests here for a meal in quite some time. Let me just add a few things to my list before you go.”

Dorcas moved to the sideboard where she kept a running list of things for Asher to pick up whenever he was in town. As she added some additional items, Martha added a few of her own—some supplies she could use for craft time with the kinner.

Once Martha had her charges down for their naps she felt restless and at loose ends. Deciding she needed a change of scenery, she stopped by the kitchen to speak to Dorcas on her way out. “Cinders hasn’t had much exercise since I’ve been here. If you don’t mind I think I’ll take the buggy out for a short ride. I shouldn’t be gone long.”

Dorcas nodded. “We’ll be fine. Enjoy your ride.”

Fifteen minutes later Martha was turning the buggy left at the foot of the drive. She chose that direction for no reason other than she saw the flash of a cardinal as it flew across the road. She wanted to be back and have time to tend to Cinders before the kinner were up from their naps. But it did feel good to ride down the road with no particular destination in mind.

Martha let her thoughts wander. She was disappointed she hadn’t heard from Laban yet.
