Cat or owl?

And topiary is not restricted to country houses or grand gardens. Some of the most whimsical topiaries of recent decades have been grown on humble garden hedges. There was a particular boom in suburban topiary in the austere post-war years, when it was a way of creating something spectacular in a garden, without great expense. Some extraordinary examples have been allowed to grow out over the years – Anthony Blagg told me about a splendid Loch Ness monster in Quinton in Birmingham that is sadly no longer there. But there are still occasional topiary treats to be found on the streets of British towns and villages.

There is always a moment of humorous incongruity when you come across a topiary cat, ship or face amongst the symmetrical hedges of a perfectly ordinary back street.
