“Funny having a nun for a sister-in-law,” George thought aloud and in a more serious frame of mind. He blinked as he turned to Meggie and squeezed her arm, but she kept her eyes on the road, even if he driving. “She’s quite lovely, isn’t she?” he went on but Meggie kept her eyes ahead.

“I said she’s quite lovely . your sister, I mean. Sister Celine whatsername.”

Meggie smiled. She had never ever regarded Aggie as lovely and yet, she had to agree with George upon reflection about the woman they had just seen a short time ago.

“Yes George . You’re right. She is quite lovely,” she said and her eyes moved momentarily across the steering wheel at George’s strong hands, giving him a dark, but appreciative look. “I’ll have to keep my eye on you George Ambrose,” she scolded affectionately before she added, “I’m delighted that you think she is so nice.”

They arrived at the church with only a few moments to spare and the priest was already waiting, surrounded by all the family, in the sacristy. Sadie had spent ages cutting up old coloured papers to make confetti and very successfully too . as it served the purpose very well.

“Do you take this woman to be your lawful wedded wife?”

George closed his eyes before he answered.

“I do.”

“And do you take this man . ”

Meggie heard no more. Her answer was impetuous.

“I do,” she said and whispered again and again, “I do . I do . I do . ” and her heart echoed in her breast again and again. ”Yes, yes, I do forever and ever and ever.”

The confetti was thrown and squeals of laughter could be heard all around the church grounds where the excitement was infectious and could not be restrained. Sadie and Robert fussed around the horse-shoes and keys, all hand made of course and wrapped carefully in silver paper. Fiona gurgled and screwed up her eyes in the sudden burst of brilliant sunshine that spread across the skies and Tom Carey stood close to Willie in proud admiration of the family that he had accepted so happily as his own. Willie smiled sadly but his heart was happy for Meggie and George, yet somewhere in his mind there was an emptiness that he could not fill, nor could he understand why. He stood in silence with an incomprehensible sense of being where he was as Mary wept and dried her eyes with joyful expectancy.

The Reception was as lavish as rationing would allow, except for the chicken and other delicate meats that could be provided when you had a butcher in the family, but strangely enough, some good neighbour always knew someone, who knew someone who could lay their hands on whiskey and beer for the auspicious occasion of a wedding. Likewise, someone somewhere, somehow had baked a cake which was pride of place on the rough trestle-table covered with the best linen sheet you could find and someone always knew someone who could gather together a few musicians, amateur or otherwise who would be delighted to entertain for the evening.
