CHAPTER 8
Lady felt pure terror gripping her heart as she slowly picked her way through the thick underbrush. She heard the sound of gunfire and men shouting all around her as she made her way away from the group of men who were pinned down. I don’t know if I can do this, she thought as she moved away. I’m not sure I’m brave enough. As these thoughts were consuming her, an image of Carl flashed through her mind. She remembered the time they had saved that boy from drowning. She heard Carl telling her how brave she had been. Then the image switched to Steve. She remembered facing the mountain lion in the cave. She heard Steve telling her, “That was the bravest thing I’ve ever seen.”
Lady felt a renewed sense of courage as these memories filled her mind. I’ve got to get this message through, she thought. Steve and the others are depending on me. I can’t let them down.
Lady had traveled for several miles and was getting very thirsty, when she came upon a stream. She dipped her head to get a drink. Suddenly, she heard a scream coming from off to her left. She jerked her head up at the sound. Then she heard shouting, and gunfire erupt a few yards from where she stood. She quickly took cover in the trees as she peered out, trying to see what was happening. Just then, three Japanese soldiers burst out of the trees and ran into the stream firing back in the direction they had come. They were shouting at each other as they fired, but Lady couldn’t understand what they were saying. The soldiers ran upstream for several yards and then disappeared into the trees on the opposite side of the stream from where they had entered it.
After they disappeared, Lady waited for several minutes before she came out from her hiding place. She crossed the stream and made her way toward the direction that the soldiers had originally come from. As she made her way through the underbrush, she heard a whimper coming from some tall grass off to her right. She slowly made her way toward the sound and peered through the grass. She spotted a Doberman Pinscher lying on his side. She recognized him as the dog who had made fun of her back at the donation center several months earlier.
Lady crawled up beside him and whispered, “Hello, are you hurt badly?”
The other dog jerked his head in surprise at the sound of her voice. “What happened?” came the weak reply.
“I don’t know,” said Lady. “I just got here. My name is Lady”
The dog slowly raised his head and looked at her. “I know you,” he said. “You’re that pretty little thing from back at the donation center. I guess they made a soldier out of you after all. I’m King.” Then he sat up and began to look around.
“Where is everybody?” he asked, still confused.
“I don’t know. I’m on my way to deliver a message to the command post.
