The fox didn’t sleep. She was on alert, listening for the slightest cracking of a twig, catching every scent, watching for a pair of yellow eyes.

The fox figured she could get herself out of any scrape, or most of them, anyway. And even when the forest did claim her, as it would eventually . . . well, then that would be that. It was different, feeling responsible for someone else’s life.

Glancing at Haven, the fox tried to push away her worries. Asleep, the cat looked even smaller and more vulnerable than ever.

The fox ground her teeth, suddenly annoyed. What was the pet thinking, going on this journey? She wasn’t meant for risks such as these. Why, she’d practically drowned today!

Well, they would just have to be that much more careful.

As the night wore on without a hint of the bobcat, the fox found herself letting her guard down, just a little. Surely the combination of the stream and the river would have knocked the wild cat off their trail.

We’re safe, the fox thought, for now. Though she knew that it was impossible for an animal to ever be truly safe in the forest.
