CHAPTER

Tania stared at him, looking as white as—okay, I’ll say it: as a ghost. “You can’t just give up!”

“But honey, what else can we do?” He shook his head. “It will take Haunted a long time to recover from this.”

They both looked miserable. I wished we’d never started this, never found the ghost. We could have had a nice vacation…. But was not knowing really better? I realized that I’d just been tagging along after Tania, resentful that she could see the ghost and I couldn’t. It was time to decide if this was my quest too. Time to help for real, or give up and get out.

“Look,” I said, “is the show really a complete loss? You got some good footage, right?”

“We can’t use any of that stuff with the séance,” Bruce said.

“But what about earlier? You have the interviews with the museum staff. The stories about the sword falling. And Stephan said he might have gotten something the first day, when that guy from the museum tried to move the sword and got blasted.”

“Well, that’s true …,” Bruce said.

“I bet you could still make a great show!” Tania said.

“You just need a little more footage,” I said. “Get Mick in there talking to the ghost in French, and maybe you’ll even get another, what do you call it, manifestation.”

“Just don’t let Madame Natasha do anything!” Tania said. “Without her, you’ll do great.”

“You said yourself, this is the best evidence you’ve ever had,” I wheedled. “You can’t just let it go. Who cares what those people think? This is your show.”

Bruce gazed at the sword room and frowned. “Maybe … let me talk to your mom.”

Mom and Bruce started discussing the options. Soon Maggie and the camera operators joined them.

Tania and I edged away. She grinned at me. “Perfect! Thank you, Jon.”

I shrugged. “Maybe I bought us some more time. We still have to figure out what to do with the ghost.”

I caught a glimpse of red from the corner of my eye, heading toward us. At first I thought it was Madame Natasha’s hair, but maybe it was really the fire shooting from her eyes. “How dare you!” she hissed. “You’ve made me look like a fool.”

“Well, you make it so easy,” I said.

“We had a deal!” Madame Natasha’s eyes glittered. I resisted the urge to step back.

Tania thrust out her chin. “And you broke that deal! I only told you about the ghost so we could help him. You had to show off, and pretend you’re so great, and the show would have left the museum without doing anything for the ghost.”

“And now you see what you’ve done?” Madame Natasha waved toward Bruce. “You’ve ruined his reputation along with mine.”

“That’s our problem.” Tania’s voice barely shook. “And you aren’t anymore.”

Madame N leaned in closer. “That’s what you think. I’ll see that Haunted takes the blame for this.”

The chill I felt was worse than when the ghost was going crazy. But I took a deep breath and looked Madame Natasha in the eye.
