Chapter Ten

ONE DAY UNTIL A+O

Alice pulled her van outside the Golden Horn in downtown Miami and stepped out. She wasn’t fully strapped with weapons as she had been the first time she had ever stepped into this club, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t armed. The sign outside said CLOSED, but she ignored it and pulled open the main door anyway. It might have been her imagination, but for a moment she thought the door wasn’t going to open before it swung on its hinges.

“Welcome back, Alice,” Jones, a level three We, said from the main bar as he polished a glass. “Is Owen with you? And how are your parents?”

The questions came so smoothly they caught her off guard, and only then did she realize she was looking for a fight. Her blood was pumping hard, and she had pulled ethereal magic into her bloodstream, and her body was pulsing with go-energy. Her neck bent from one side to the other before she answered.

“Thank you, Jones. And no, Owen’s not with me.” She ignored the question about her parents. “I’m looking for Cornelius. He isn’t answering his phone.”

“Sorry, I haven’t seen him. Can I get you a drink? Or anything else? We have some sandwich things in the back.”

“No, I just need Cornelius or one of his people to tell me where he is. Or how I can get ahold of him.”

“Mara or Damon might know. You want me to see if I can get one of them?”

“They aren’t at the back table playing cards?” Alice asked.

“Not for a couple of weeks. The place has been mostly shut down after you left.”

“I thought Mara was going to open up—” Alice wasn’t sure how to speak about the room downstairs. It was a private club for We and etherealists alike. She found herself hushing her voice. “The ballroom downstairs?”

“Aye, she is. But first we have to get everything in order. It’s best I don’t talk about that side of things until after they have already happened. Keeps my job here safe, if you know what I mean.”

“I do. No problem, Jones.”

“Alice, what in all that is holy are you doing here?” Mara said, moving into the room from the main hall. Mara was tall, strong and thin. Her skin was flawless, and her hair shined black. Mara could have easily been snatched right out of an old-school gangster movie.

“Hello, Mara. It’s nice to see you. And I see you’re all dressed up.” Her slim-cut black dress ran from her shoulders to the floor, and across the chest were gold bees. “I am looking for Cornelius. He’s been working to get Father Patrick back to me, but he’s no longer answering his phone. And I came here to help. That is some dress.”

“Thank you. Now, is Cornelius not answering his phone or not answering your calls?” Mara asked, raising an eyebrow that was just short of hostile.

Alice wasn’t sure why she rubbed Mara the wrong way more often than not. Perhaps
